Oh, the drama of chicken life! Just when you think you have your feathered friends figured out, they prove you wrong in the most hilarious ways. Recently, I decided to treat my flock to one of those big treat blocks, imagining their delight at the colorful seeds and goodies. But instead of clucking in joy, they went into full-on panic mode! It was chaos as two hens made a daring escape through a seemingly invisible gap, while the roosters clung to their ladies for dear life. Even the ducks were frozen in shock—seriously, I felt like I was in a feathered horror movie! Now, here I am, petting that innocent treat block, trying to calm my chickens down.
Guys…..I’ve seen my chickens go into fight or flight mode over some pretty silly things…..A rabbit, a Walmart bag, bright colored clothing….This one might take the cake.
I got my chickens one of those big treat blocks. Just a big square with different seeds and treats in it. I thought my flock would love that, especially since it’s been too cold to free range this week.
I was so wrong. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever been so wrong in my life 😂
The second those birds laid their eyes on that thing, they were screaming and fighting to get away from it. I gently placed it in the run, which caused 2 hens to somehow escape the run through the tiniest little spot that I honestly didn’t know existed. One hen straight up shoulder-checked the main door and escaped to the yard. The roosters were holding onto the hens for reassurance and safety. The ducks were speechless and frozen in fear. I also was speechless and frozen in fear because I’ve never seen my chickens react like that ever in my 6 years of chicken-tending. For a second I was afraid I had a grizzly bear following me or something, because what the hell was that ?! 😂😂😂 My poor babies! As I type this, I’m sitting in the run and gently petting the block of treats to reassure my chickens that it doesn’t bite. How did I get here? What is this life?

- Left my chicken run door open yesterday and caught some squatters...I just had a very bizarre Sunday. I leave my run door open for my girls whenever I'm home and check on them throughout the day. Yesterday afternoon, while doing the rounds, I spotted one of these little babies running around inside the run cheeping her little head off. Absolute flabbergasted, I did a sweep of the yard and found another one huddled in a deep corner on the fence line. We live in a standard fenced-in suburban neighborhood with no real water sources nearby, so I'm very confused as to how they happened to end up in my yard that coincidentally has all the facilities to care for chicks. I'm guessing mama duck had a nest in my neighbor's yard, tried to march her new brood to water, and these two somehow got under the fence. The loud one must've heard my chickens and ran to the coop for safety. I drove around the neighborhood looking for mama, but to no avail. Once it started getting dark I brought them inside to the brooder and got them set up for the night. I immediately started imagining the movie-like scenario of raising them and eventually releasing them to a nearby pond where I could visit them for years to come, but unfortunately I understand that the best thing I could do for them in reality is to turn them over to a wildlife rehab to ensure they have the best chance in the wild. I've contacted a local facility and plan to turn them over today. I'm told they're going to be raised by their resident duck mother, Ingrid, along with her adopted flock. Just wanted to share with some folks that might appreciate it! I know every time I see some Mallards I'll imagine it's them. And who knows. - Tricked by a chickenI was looking for her everywhere, I only have 11 chickens so I know when one is missing m. She wasn’t in the coop, not in the garage. Not on the porch. No signs of a struggle- all the other hens were acting normal, and my rooster was unfazed. I used treats, I kept searching. I checked the field across the street, I walked all up and down my road. I checked the bushes and natural hides in my yard MULITPLE times. Finally I found her. Hidden in the leaves, in my yard. On a hidden nest of eggs that she must have been hiding for some time, as it was an impressive amount for a little bantam. And then she screamed at me!!! - broody hen drama?! 😂Ok, so one of my hens, Boujiee (aka Miss Boujiee Butt because her tail feathers were gone and her butt looked a little… questionable 💀), has been hoarding and laying on eggs. She rarely leaves the coop—and if she does come out (because she knows I have treats), the SECOND I even look like I’m heading toward the coop, she sprints back in, throws herself over the eggs, and instantly turns into a full-blown security system. Like ma’am… nobody is coming for your children 😭 I’ve officially decided to just let her have them. Now here’s where it gets funny—our other hen, Goldie (because of her pretty golden-laced feathers), will sometimes go sit on the eggs when Boujiee gets up… like they’re co-parenting or splitting custody or something. BUT TODAY… I found TWO eggs just sitting in the middle of the coop. Not in the nest. Not hidden. Just… placed there. And it honestly looked like Boujiee moved them so Goldie could sit on those instead of her sacred egg stash. Like she really said: “Here. Those TWO are YOURS.
