Chicks Sleeping On Top of Brooder Plate

It’s an egg-citing time for your "Rustic Rock" and "Americana" chicks as they reach the four-week milestone! Seeing them pile up on top of the brooder plate instead of snuggling underneath is a cluck-tastic sign that they may be seeking a more independent lifestyle. While it seems they are ready to embrace the great outdoors (or at least their cozy coop), it’s important to consider that one little feathered friend is lagging behind in the feathering department. Her slower feathering might mean she still appreciates a bit of warmth. Their happy cheeps and playful pecking indicate contentment, but you might want to keep the brooder plate handy just in case. | | These chicks are about 4 weeks old, "Rustic Rock" and "Americana" aka Easter Egger chicks. I've noticed the past week or so, they no longer sleep under the brooder plate. They pile up on top of it. I've raised chicks before and I would think that means they don't *want* the heat but I'm not quite sure they are feathered enough to fully go without. One for sure is a little slower feathering than the rest and I will post a picture of her because she is the least feathered. The rest are a bit further along (pics 2&3). They make happy cheeps most of the day (the runt one "Pepper" has begun flying at/pecking at her sisters a bit but it seems like normal pecking order stuff- no blood drawn) but by and large they do not seem distressed or unhappy at all. - First chicks!Hello chicken veterans! (Photo taken right before bedding change, also their first time trying cucumber scraps! They loved them🫶) I raised chicks as a kid with my family, but stopped after the flock was brutalized by a family of raccoons (R.I.P. Red, you were my favorite). Now, I'm raising my own chicks! I got 6 to start: 4 Plymouth Rock and 2 Orpington. I bought them at my local Tractor Supply, and currently have these lovely ladies in a 4x4 indoor enclosure with a heat lamp mounted 3' up in their own room! When I bought them 4 weeks ago, I noticed some had wing feathers and tail feathers sooner than others. Now that they're nearly completely feathered, it's hard to tell how old they are especially since I couldn't possibly tell you when they were hatched. That being said, I'm not sure how to judge the temperature they'd be most comfortable at until their new coop is built. We had a cold front and with them being in a rather drafty room, I set up a small oscillating heater... but now I'm rethinking based on some of the temperatures you guys are putting the chickens out at. I'm hoping a more experienced chicken person can tell me how old you think these girls are and some guidance on indoor brooding > outdoor coop and run transition–especially for predators and safety. - Something wrong or just a chill chick?Hi all! first time having chickens, we lost two earlier this week so I'm a bit stressed making sure they are all happy, I have one Plymouth Rock that just seems to act a bit different than the others. She's eating/drinking/pooping just fine but will often times go lay down directly under the heat lamp while the other ones run around. I have them on the same medicated feed they were on at the farm store and have chick boost in their water so I don't think it's anything nutritional but I don't want to lose another one. - Chicks rolling in feed?This is not my chicken's brooder, but just a little fun pen I put them for the first time today, in so I can sit in it with them and hand feed them, to bond. But these two chicks are doing this funny thing where they're fluffing themselves out and almost rolling in the food and in my hand. - Normal behavior?My baby chicks have done this quite a bit and I wasn't sure what behavior this is and if it's normal. They usually do it on my lap or in my hands. I thought that maybe they want a dust bath, but they never seem to do it when they're in the coarse sand that I got for them. Should I be providing something different for them?
