Need Help Dogs Killed My Chicken
Our take
Hi! I posted over a year ago about some chickens that my parents had bought and then essentially neglected so I took over. They been doing really well since then until this past week. We had a family member pass that had dogs that no one would take in, so we took them in. For the most part they didn’t seem interested in the chickens and we have them separated by both a wooden gate/door and wire fencing. The other day the big dog managed to bust open the door while I was out there and both dogs ended up attacking my chickens. They did catch and kill one but I managed to fight them off long enough for the rest to safely escape to the coop.
My parents won’t re-home them (for obvious reasons) even though I worry they’ll become bloodthirsty and try again.
Any suggestions on what I can do to reinforce the chickens areas and to ease my worries?
We already have: cameras, an additional monitor gate(added to prevent access to orginal door), wire buried to avoid digging, regular fencing, and concrete in weak points like corners

- Dog got ahold of my chicken…So today the worst thing happened and I feel so so awful. I have six 12ish week old chickens, it’s my first flock of my own. Lately they keep escaping the run even after I have raised the fencing and clipped their wings. I have no idea how they are doing it. I also have 7 dogs. I ALWAYS walk out and check to make sure none of the chickens have escaped their run (it’s 350sq ft and has 4ft fencing all around) before letting the dogs out and I stand and watch them while they run around. Today I forgot to grab a water, it’s hot here in Arizona so I walked back inside for 30 seconds to grab some. I go to walk back out and somehow one of my dogs has one of my girls. She seems physically fine other than some tail feathers being ripped out. She’s walking and eating and drinking but I’m still SO worried and I feel so awful that I took my eyes off the dogs for even a second. Is there anything I should be looking out for involving like internal injuries or shock? Picture of Clover after the fact. And the criminal in question. >:( sorry for the long post it’s kind of a vent. 🥲 submitted by /u/Hphzrdlylvng [link] [comments]
- My flock was murdered last night. We had our first flock of 6 hens for almost a year before my dad woke me up to tell me an animal had gotten in and killed them and left the remains. I haven't inspected the area yet as there are apparently still feathers everywhere and it's been less than an hour since I found out, but the animal burrowed under the chicken wire/bent it up to get in. We hadn't secured the bottom of the wire into the ground as we didn't expect this issue (again, first time chicken owners), so it wasn't the hardest thing to do to bend it up and get in. What is the best method for securing the wire into the ground? I'm also extremely upset so I'd appreciate not dragging me for not properly securing it in the first place. Any advice/consolation is appreciated. submitted by /u/Ok_Currency_7597 [link] [comments]
- Our neighbors chicken got into our yard and our dog got itHi, we aren’t chicken owners but our backyard neighbors have chickens (our yard is separated by a fence). The neighbors extended the fence up in some spots but not all of them and one of their chickens just got into our yard and our dog tried to play with it (roughly). The chicken is still alive but seems injured and our neighbor isn’t answering texts so we don’t know what to do with it?? Any advice?? We feel so bad submitted by /u/MindlessTell1124 [link] [comments]
- Small flock of chickens hate ONE new chickenHi there, I had a neighbor ask me to adopt their solo chicken after it's partner died, which I was happy to do, but it's been extremely rough trying to integrate her with my current small flock because they hate her. Every time they are together in the yard they pin her down and peck at the back of her neck. Here is the timeline of everything I tried: One month garage quarantine Two months of "through the fence" visual introduction with no physical encounters. During this time she frequently puffed up at one of my other chickens. Six Months living in a separate enclosure that is visible from the other (her own food, water, roost, next etc). Free range in the yard every weekend, where the flock beats on her relentlessly if they see her and she has to constantly run away. I'm hoping that these contact days would improve but they are not (maybe very slightly) I'm not sure what else to try. I'd like everyone in the same run and coop during the day and to stop fighting. I have about 100 sqft per chicken in my run and a coop large enough for everyone. submitted by /u/Brad-Moon-Rising [link] [comments]
