How many eggs do your chickens hoard?
Our take
Have you ever been flabbergasted by your chickens' egg-cellent hoarding skills? I certainly was when my daughter-in-law checked on our small flock of 30 mismatched chickens this morning. Among them, two hens are currently broody, and I thought, “Why not let them be?” After all, a couple of baby chicks could be a delightful addition! However, I was completely taken aback to discover that one hen had 10 eggs tucked under her, while the other had an unbelievable **46**! How on earth did she manage to collect and incubate that many eggs all on her own? It's truly insane! This got me wondering—what's the most eggs you've ever caught your hens hoarding? Let's share our cluck-tastic stories!

| I’m just flabbergasted at the moment. I have a small flock of about 30 mismatched chickens. 2 of them are currently broody, but I figured let them be. A couple baby chicks couldn’t hurt, right? We can sell some if we need to NBD….. Well, my DIL decided to go check on the broody hens this morning and see how many of the eggs are fertile: 10 under one hen, ***46*** under the other hen. I don’t even understand how this heffa managed to collect and successfully incubate 46 eggs by herself. This is insane 😭 But it got me to wondering if others have ever run into something similar. - my first weird egg!i’m not super worried about it because i’m pretty sure i know what’s going on. poor donna was broody for over two months and has been dropping eggs in unexpected places (like out in the run) the last three days like she just couldn’t hold them in. so i’ve sorta been expecting a fairy egg but didn’t expect it to be soft too! i’ve just switched everyone to all flock feed (new chicks) with oyster shells available, so her calcium intake has changed but she knows where to get more. maybe there’s something more i could be doing? the whole gang has just moved into a new coop but donna has laid eggs in the new nesting boxes a couple times so i think she likes it in there alright. we still have the old coop open too but no one seems interested. idk suggestions welcomed (re: the weird laying locations and shell quality) but she’ll hopefully work it out herself! submitted by /u/mensfrightsactivists [link] [comments]
- Broody hen question that I can't seem to find a definite answer to about adding more eggs over a few days? How many days can you/should you let a broody hen accumulate eggs to hatch? We have one that just started showing signs (after having just been inconveniently broody a few months ago when it was too cold lol) and I want to give her a chance this time! I took yesterday's eggs because I wasn't positive if she would stay in the nesting box, but she's in there again today and pancaking/being protective. We have 4 hens so I'm thinking about giving her whatever eggs are laid through the next 3 days for around 12 total, and then potentially taking her out with those to put in in a protected part of their habitat. Soooo... Does that sound right? I would assume if you had one broody hen, duck, turkey, whatever, on their own that days of laying go by before the true "lockdown" incubation begins. I can't seem to find the right way to Google this to find out how the 21ish day window is affected in this scenario and I just wanna successfully be a chicken grandma! submitted by /u/stanky-hanky-panky [link] [comments]
