Critique before adding chickens? (Post says the work still to be done) Thanks!
Our take

| So this is our temporary (maybe much of the summer) coop/run until our main setup is finished. The coop is 4x6, the run is 8x8. They will also have a yard tunnel for running sometimes, and I may free range when I'm out with them. We have a fox but he never comes around when we're out, and there are hawks but the yard has lots of trees and bushes. The panels of the run are all screwed where they join (the zip ties were to hold before securing, I just left them for extra security), the hardware cloth is stapled and secured with washers/screws, there will be a hasp lock on the run door (not just the slider bolts). The run will have the apron extend up into the joists, and then the space below the joist will have boards running from the joists to the ground. The top is flat, so will need blowing we know, but that's fine, and it's not covered but the area is shady all day. I know it's not huge, but, in addition to other time out (we also have a moveable chicken enclosure - 10x7 - that we'll use when we're out but it's not secure otherwise, to give them fresh grass/etc), I'm going to build a climbing area, and a swing. The coop will have an automatic door (into the run), and the windows will be covered with hardware cloth and I'll find a means of keeping out the rain as needed. (Shutters probably.) Please let me know what you see that I'm missing / not thinking of .... thanks! [link] [comments] |

- Coop helpFirst time building a coop/run. First time owning chickens. We have 6 chicks that I’m working on getting a home finished up for. The run is nearly finished (150sq) partially shaded and partially open air. The coop itself is closer to 50sq (5x8ish with sloped ceiling). You can see the man door access on the left side. Concerned about ventilation in the Midwest during the summer. The coop portion is insulated but not currently ventilated beyond the coop/run door that would be closed in the evening anyways. What’s appropriate here? Do I need a powered fan to push fresh air in? Do I cut some passive vents in the wall? Not willing to cut into the roof but walls are fair game. We’re relatively humid at times and the temp can exceed 90f at times. They’ll have access to fresh air and shade during the days. Any advice is greatly appreciated submitted by /u/PancakesandScotch [link] [comments]
- Very Productive SaturdayWorked from 8-8 yesterday getting this new chicken run made! Felt like forever but there was only two of us doing it. Its 12x9, and about 7 feet at the highest point. Might be overkill but it looks so much better than the other run we had. (Last picture) Still not totally finished, need to finish the hardware cloth where the wall meets the roof, add the tin roof, put up the door and a couple other finishing touches. Anyone have any suggestions as to things I can put inside. I was thinking of maybe building them a spiral perch "staircase" so they have something to climb on. Let me know what works with your birds! submitted by /u/itz_abby12 [link] [comments]
- Chicken fencing helpPicture for tax. This is only their supervised few hour a day turnout area for now as they’re very young, but I’m about to set them up a large run. I was going to buy 6 foot 19 gauge 1/2 inch hardware cloth and bury it going outwards to protect against digging predators. However, how should I fill in the area? Would gravel work or will it get dug up too easy? Should I use soil? I also had holes dug for wooden fence posts, so same story for that. Gravel? Soil? How can it be stable? TIA! Main predator worries fox, raccoon, opossum, weasels, fishers and hawks. So mainly rodent based, not so much coyote or dog. I will be covering their run with netting. submitted by /u/Loveinhooves [link] [comments]
