Finally doing a proper trip in my 30s - Southeast Asia, want something more than beaches. Where would you go?

So I've been putting off a "real" trip for years. Work, life, the usual excuses. I'm finally in a position to do it and I want to do it right.

I'm thinking Southeast Asia, probably 10 to 14 days. But honestly I'm a bit sick of the idea of just lying on a beach in Thailand or doing the standard Bali circuit. I want something that actually feels like an adventure - whether that's trekking, culture, remote areas, whatever. Something I'll still be talking about in 5 years. I'd like to potentially go with a group tour operater.

I'm in my mid-30s, reasonably fit, not a backpacker budget but not splashing out on 5-star either. Open to doing it as part of a small group if the vibe is right — I've had bad experiences with group tours feeling like a school trip, so not that.

A few things I genuinely can't decide:

  • Go deep into one country or bounce between two or three?
  • Would you recommend going as a group tour?
  • WOuld you recommend any group tours for 30s+
  • What destinations would suit someone in their 30s? (SEA vibes I think)
  • Is the Philippines actually worth it or is it overhyped for the effort of getting around?
  • Are there destinations that tend to attract a slightly older, more interesting crowd rather than the 21-year-old party scene?

Any honest takes welcome. What would you do if this was your trip?
