What to do for ill chick
Our take
I recently picked up some chicks and two older but not full grown hens from a local neighbor. The two bigger ones were in a coop. When we went to look at them there was one laying on the ground very lethargic. He took it out and put it in another area and told me the others were probably not letting it eat or drink. I am new to chickens so it seemed like a reasonable thing.
Within a few days one of the older hens had a goopy eye and was making a sound that sounded like a sneeze and was lethargic for a few days. She is doing better now. No goopy eye anymore and less sneezing.
However now one of the little chicks has sunken eyes that are crusty and it is extremely lethargic. How do I know if this is bird flu or not? What can (if anything) can I do for the chick?
They are separated from my coop and flock and I have been washing hands when going between their spaces to try and make sure the original flock doesn't get sick.

- Sick hen please helpThis is my hen Tidbit we’re very connected to her we’ve had her for almost 2 years now and she’s my last hen who was connected to my forever rooster DR. P who sadly disappeared in December. Dr. P was more of a pet to me than anything else and we had a very very very special bond… Tidbit had kind of stepped up and takes care of the flock since he passed… out of nowhere this morning, tidbit seemed extremely off, walking around slowly , but not going very far and moving pretty slow… she also let me handle her very easy. wet stool all over her vent .. one of her eyes is pretty squinty and not much interest in food or water. I have her resting in a milk crate and I’ve been sitting with her for hours. I’ve been using a water dropper to get some fluids in her, but I’m very very concerned because I haven’t seen much improvement over the course of the day. Does anyone have any advice or experience with something like this???? submitted by /u/AsvpRocky24 [link] [comments]
- Help baby chicke nI volunteer at a place that has baby chicks, and the main bird volunteer is out of town and one of the babies is not doing well. This morning I found it on the bottom of the container with all the other baby chicks and it looked like it was dead, but it was moving a little so I gave it some egg yolk and Pedialyte mixed in a dropper and held it near the heater (not too close!) alternating betweeen heating it and heating it, for about 90 minutes. It had a lump on its chest, which I just learned is a crop. I had to leave for a while but is there anything I can try to purchase? I usually foster puppies and have lots of experience with sick puppies but none with birds. Please be kind - I am not knowledgeable but willing to read or learn to help until tomorrow when bird person comes back. submitted by /u/EmphasisFew [link] [comments]
- I need helpHi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on one of my hens. She’s a female, just about a year old, and recently I’ve noticed she’s not looking as well as the rest of my flock. Her comb is a bit darker than the others, and there seems to be some mild swelling in her face along with small speckles on it. Behavior-wise, she’s definitely off. She tends to stay away from the roosters and avoids any related interactions, sits puffed up in the corner a lot, and isn’t very active. When I come near, she runs to me, tries to hide, and wants to be picked up constantly. She just doesn’t seem like she’s thriving the way she used to. She is still showing interest in food and water and appears to be eating and drinking normally. For context: • The rest of the flock appears completely healthy • No signs of mites or lice • I recently treated the flock for coccidiosis (another hen had it) • I’ve checked her feathers and vent thoroughly and didn’t find anything abnormal initially. (more on this later in the post.) • I also recently had another hen isolated for a possible respiratory infection and wry neck I’d appreciate any guidance possible. She’s quite special to me. And I will do whatever I can to help her. Please help. Recent update….. I isolated her from the flock and started her on some basic vitamins, vitamin E B12 and selenium as well as antibiotics. She’s on day 5 and today a few days ago I noticed she was pulling feathers out on her side upon further inspection. This is what the irritated area looks like…. I have since put a makeshift onesie on her out of a sock to keep her from accessing the area. But she doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I know she’s bothering the little green tag on her ankle, it’s there for identification purposes. It’s already removed. submitted by /u/NoCupcake7450 [link] [comments]
- Please help!!My favorite hen peachy isn't feeling good. Her tail is bobbing and she's a bit lethargic. I examined her a bit and her crop is small and hard, she also started struggling to breath when I picked her up and tried to get away (this is the most cuddly chicken I've ever had she ADORES being held) I put her in the garage with water and the Internet told me not to give her solid food for 12-24 hours so I crushed up a boiled egg (without the shell) and gave that to her. I saw someone say online to feed a chicken with a bad crop some olive oil and massage the crop so I might try that tomorrow. I'm very worried about her she's one of my best friends honestly, she was the first chicken to ever run to me for cuddles instead of me having to chase or pick them up lol. submitted by /u/AdEnvironmental4177 [link] [comments]
