What’s wrong with my chicken?
Our take
Oh no, it sounds like your feathered friend is having a rough time! Vent gleet is a messy condition that can leave both chickens and their caretakers feeling a bit flustered. It’s great that you’ve already started cleaning her up with warm water—that’s a solid first step! After the bath, you’ll want to ensure her vent area is thoroughly dried to prevent further irritation. Keep an eye out for other symptoms, like lethargy or changes in appetite, as these can help pinpoint the issue. Providing a clean, stress-free environment and a balanced diet can also promote healing. Remember, your chicken’s health is a cluck-tastic priority, so don’t hesitate to consult a vet if things don’t improve. Wishing you both a speedy recovery!
I think it’s vent gleet but I am not sure. I’ve put her in warm water and started cleaning it off. What else should I do?

- Sick chicken, yellow fluid. Our 2 year old lavender orpington hen Ivy was showing signs of being egg bound (penguin like stance, hadn’t seen her lay an egg, throbbing vent, wouldn’t eat or walk around). I gave her a few epson salt baths, but the second time I picked her up to take her out of the bath this fluid came out of her vent. Is it possible the egg broke inside her and its yolk or is it just a sign of an infection or sickness. I haven’t seen any egg shells and this is my first time dealing with an egg bound hen. She seemes to have perked up a bit the next day but her vent is still throbbing and she looks a bit hunched. Shes not walking around much, but she’s drinking water (with added vitamins and electrolytes). Any idea what this could be or what I can do to help her. there’s no vet that accepts chickens in my area so any advice is greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/Jonah_thelion16 [link] [comments]
- first time chicken owner! is my chicks vent okay?We just got our chicks yesterday. I've been keeping a close eye on this one because a lot of the other plymouth rocks in the brooder at the store had pasty butt. So far no pasty butt, but I unnoticed today her vent was more noticeable than yesterday. None of the other chicks look like this. At the moment it's not red, but i just want to make sure she's okay!! I'm learning I'm a very anxious chicken keeper - very new to this. Anything I should watch for or do to prevent any issues? submitted by /u/chasin-butterflys [link] [comments]
- Sick chickenMy two year old Blondie has been acting sick today. She didn’t want to come off the roost this morning so after an hour we got her down and inspected her. No signs of injury, egg bound, vent looks good. Found her hiding in the bushes a few hours later so I brought her into quarantine and that’s when I noticed she sounded hoarse. What should I do next? submitted by /u/Sara_Lunchbox [link] [comments]
