What breed could she be? This is our mystery girl, her name is Moon. She turned up one day about 18 months ago and decided to add herself to our little flock. Marched up and down until we let her in!
Our take

| We have no idea how old she is of course (but I'm certain she's older than our other 2 year old hens), or her type. She's a big girl, bigger bodied than our Warren, Speckled Maran and hybrid Black Rock, but with similar markings to a black rock, albeit less ginger. She's shiny black all over with a few golden ginger feathers around her head, and has slightly tufty legs/feet. She lays smallish dark brown and often speckled eggs. I'd just be interested to know her breeding because I'm always surprised by what a beefcake she is when I pick her up 😆 I'm also wondering if her comb has been damaged by cold at some point in her past as it has a dark edge whereas our other hens have fully red and healthy looking combs. She doesn't appear to have come from any of our neighbours or neighbouring farms, we live rural and checked around for a long time after she appeared at our place. Whatever she is, she's part of the girl gang for life, we don't do strays around here! ❤️ [link] [comments] |

- Mystery Chick IDThis chick came out of a Tractor Supply bin labeled Barred Rock Pullet, very obviously not, but any guesses what it could be? All black feathers and feathered slate colored legs has me thinking some type mix of Marans. At 8 weeks is bigger than the Silver Laced Wyandottes I purchased at the same time. The comb seems odd to me, doesn’t look like any other chicken I have. Is also very aggressive with one of my 10 week old Easter eggers but mostly ignores all the other chicks in the run. submitted by /u/biskets4all [link] [comments]
- Breed help? (Update at 11.5 weeks) Hi friends! Me again, so some suspicions have been put to rest, but curious to hear some opinions! Ordered these "girls" from valley hatchery late February, and fairly certain we have all pullets (yay!) The gold laced wyandotte is suspicious to me, but curious to thoughts. Updated photos are attached, but my thoughts are barred rock, buff orpington, brown leghorn, rhode island red, gold laced wyandotte (pullet or cockeral confirm?), Welsummer????, and 3 easter egger/olive egger types. We ordered 6 "rainbow egg layer special" chicks from Valley hatchery and honestly had a really great experience in spite of getting three bonus chicks and having to completely upgrade our homestead set-up 😅 (also bought a much larger coop because chicken math taking effect before receiving our birds was the surprise)! submitted by /u/acooldogdad [link] [comments]
