This "hardware cloth"!
Our take
In the whimsical world of chicken-keeping, the term "hardware cloth" has sparked an amusing debate among poultry enthusiasts. One Reddit user, in their humorous account, highlights the stark contrast between the name and reality, noting that it feels more like "Heavy duty industrial grade chicken wire" than any sort of cloth. This delightful blend of humor and frustration encapsulates the everyday trials of keeping our feathered friends safe from raccoons and other predators. It’s a sentiment many can relate to, especially those who can share in the misadventures of poultry protection. It reminds us of our collective experiences, much like the emotional bond and quirky tales found in articles such as My chicken friends had a funeral for one of the hens and My easter eggers are insane.
The challenge of installing this seemingly misnamed "cloth" reflects a larger theme in the chicken-keeping community: the balance between humor and practicality. As our friend discovered, the task of installing hardware cloth isn’t just a simple DIY project; it’s a test of patience, creativity, and perhaps a few choice words. This resonates with many of us, who may have tackled similar projects only to realize that what seems straightforward in theory often becomes a hilarious struggle in practice. The idea that this “cloth” can spring into action, much like our unpredictable feathered friends, adds a layer of absurdity to the experience. It’s in these moments of vulnerability and shared laughter that we find community, much like when one of our favorite hens lays two eggs at once, as noted in another engaging post, She laid two eggs at the same time = one medium-ish, one tiny tiny.
Beyond the laughs, the incident also highlights the importance of proper protection for our chickens. Raccoons and other predators pose real threats, and the right materials are essential for safeguarding our beloved birds. It’s a reminder that while humor can lighten the mood, the stakes are high for our “babbies.” The tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment of the hardware cloth's true nature serves as a rallying cry for fellow chicken keepers to invest in quality products that ensure the safety of their flocks, even if the terminology leaves much to be desired.
As we navigate the ups and downs of chicken-keeping, let’s not forget that these experiences are shared. The ongoing dialogue about hardware cloth, raccoon defenses, and the quirks of our feathered companions enriches our community. Each story, laugh, and mishap brings us closer together, creating a tapestry of shared experiences that remind us we’re not alone in our love-hate relationship with chickens. So, as we move forward, let’s keep sharing our tales of triumphs and tribulations, and who knows? Maybe the next time you’re wrestling with that industrial-grade chicken wire, you’ll find yourself laughing and remembering that you’re part of a wonderfully quirky community—one cluck at a time. What’s your next chicken adventure going to be?
First off thank you all for recommending the hardware cloth to protect my babbies from the Racoons, But I gotta say the companies calling this "cloth" is hilarious 😂! I was thinking it would be a malleable tough mesh! The more appropriate name is "Heavy duty industrial grade chicken wire". Im sure yall can picture me installing this by myself where the rolls come in 10 foot lengths so they are highly sprung! I thought I cussed alot while working on cars, lol!
