swollen eye?
Our take

When welcoming feathered friends into your home, the excitement can be as egg-citing as it is daunting, especially for first-time chicken parents. Our fellow chicken enthusiast, NeedleVast, recently shared a heartfelt inquiry about one of their newly rescued hens, who has been sporting an unusually swollen eye since their arrival. This situation raises important questions about chicken health and underscores the learning curve that comes with owning these charming yet sometimes bewildering birds. NeedleVast's concern highlights a crucial aspect of chicken care: the necessity of being observant and responsive to changes in our birds, particularly when they involve health issues. A swollen eye can indeed stem from various causes, including injuries, infections, or even allergies. For a novice, deciphering the cause can feel like a game of fowl hide-and-seek, but it’s vital to remember that taking the time to understand your chickens’ needs is part of the journey. The fear of not knowing what to do is common among new chicken owners, but community support can be a beacon of hope. By reaching out and sharing experiences, as NeedleVast has done, we can collectively learn and grow, making our feathered friends' lives all the better.
The emotional investment in caring for chickens can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when faced with health concerns. For many, these birds become not just pets but cherished members of the family. It's natural to worry and seek reassurance—after all, who wouldn’t feel a bit vulnerable when their beloved hen appears unwell? In moments like these, it’s crucial to lean on the knowledge available in the community. For instance, simple remedies, such as warm compresses, can often provide relief, as suggested in discussions about related topics like What's this swelling from under her eye?.
Ultimately, the experience shared by NeedleVast serves as a reminder that while chickens can be quirky and sometimes a little intimidating, they also provide a unique opportunity for connection and growth. Every challenge faced opens the door to learning, fostering a deeper bond with our feathered friends. As we navigate the ups and downs of chicken ownership, we can find comfort in the camaraderie of fellow chicken keepers. So, to all the new chicken owners out there: remember that it’s okay to feel unsure; it’s all part of the cluck-tastic adventure! What other challenges have you faced in caring for your chickens, and how have they shaped your journey?
| hello, my family rescued three hens a couple of days ago. this is the first time we have taken care of chickens and so we have a very slim amount of knowledge but we are trying our hardest to provide a good life for them. I'm posting here because one of the hens has had an incredibly swollen eye the entire time we have had her. the picture is included, I hope it is somewhat easy to see - her eye stays shut like this the vast majority of the time. I'm not sure if this should be chalked up to an injury before we got her or if it is a health concern. If anyone could offer their advice or give any suggestions, it would be extremely appreciated. I'm also happy to provide more pics/info if needed. thank you! [link] [comments] |

- Catching an injured chickenHello everyone. I live in a neighborhood where chickens are constantly roaming the streets and houses. Yesterday I noticed a young hen who appears to have some eye infection as she is unable to open one eye and the other eye barley open. She is docile, but keeps bumping into objects/curbs. She is able to fly as well. I contacted a rescue who is willing to take her in, but I will have to catch her. I have no experience in catching chickens and just don’t feel comfortable doing it. I’ve been trying all morning but I am stressing her out. I tried with a towel but it scared her and she flew away. Any other tips? I don’t have a animal cage and don’t have the means to get one either. She’s walking around with one eye completely shut and the other a little open but it is visibly red. She is mobile, just bumping into objects. submitted by /u/traplord_ [link] [comments]
