splayed leg chick
Our take
Oh no, it sounds like you’ve got a little chick in quite the pickle! Splayed leg, especially in such a tiny one-day-old chick, can be a real concern, but don’t worry—you’re not alone in this! Curly toes can add a twist to the situation, making it even trickier for your feathered friend to stand. First things first, let’s make sure your little buddy is cozy and warm, as that’s crucial for its recovery. You might have heard about using Band-Aids to gently hold the legs together, which can be a helpful trick. However, with those curly feet, we’ll need to get creative! Let's explore some care tips to give your chick the best chance at a cluck-tastic recovery. Hang in there!
i have a one day old chick and there is something wrong with its legs and i’m pretty sure it has curly feet too. I don’t think it has eaten yet. please give me any advice on how to care for it. I saw that you can use Band-Aids to keep the legs together, but because of its feet it’s not really standing up on its own

- Injured Chick LegNeed advice for a ~2 week old chick with leg injury / can’t feed itself well. About 2.5–3 days ago one of my chicks developed a leg issue. The whole leg goes out to the side sometimes (almost split position). It uses its wings to help push itself up and stand. Other symptoms: • cannot grip well with that foot/toes • trouble balancing • wants to eat and seems hungry, but misses food by a few millimeters and can’t really feed itself properly, so I’ve been hand assisting • still alert and vocal • escaped a small box this morning, so it still has some energy I’ve been keeping it warm, on a towel/non-slip surface, with food/water close by. I also separated it with one buddy chick for calmer recovery. My questions: 1. Does this sound more like splay leg, hip dislocation, nerve damage, or something else? 2. Should I try a hobble/splay-leg brace at this stage? 3. Any safe way to help it eat/drink better? 4. At what point is recovery unlikely? Any advice from people who have rehabbed chicks would be appreciated. I’m worried because it’s not feeding itself normally. (If helpful I can post photos/video in comments. submitted by /u/Organic-Ocelot2324 [link] [comments]
- One of my chicks has an issue with his leg, help!!This baby chick was born abt 2 weeks ago and as you can see hes p behind. he had splay legs so I did the whole thing w bandaids and he was improving, but very slowly. he was one of the first to hatch but he's still the smallest. despite this he tries to run and jump, and eats and drinks like normal too. Yesterday when I got home from work, he didnt have his bandages on (not That unusual he picks at them and i replace them daily) but was just totally dragging his foot. I assume he was like that all day while I was at work bc I could tell he hadn't eaten either. I put bandages back on but now he wants to turn it all the way backwards like this instead of improved stance. he took his bandages off again and is still turning it all the way back. as far as I can tell nothings broken, my guess is he pulled or stretched a ligament. bandages dont work much anymore bc he just folds the leg inward and turns the foot around. I did notice a slight dif in positioning of his legs as shown in the second Pic. if I grab his leg I can position it like normal and can have him stand or sit w my aid and he will do it, its just that as soon as I let go it bounces back. Any tips? is it dislocated? I do know he has a scab on his left knee joint but its not a deeper injury, its older than this issue. PS. Ik hes really small for his age, he has been growing although slow, I really wanna give him a chance bc he was doing so well. TLDR; Baby chick had splayed stance, improved but tore bandages off and is now like this. no noticeable breaks, does not appear to be in pain. is it dislocated? how do I help him? submitted by /u/Firm_Construction242 [link] [comments]
- Help with baby chick, leg problemsHi! My sister had this chick hatch and it cannot walk because its leg and toes are all curled up. At first she thought it was splay leg so we tried some splints, tape, etc but that didn’t seem to help. We have been drop feeding and watering her, and have also given selenium, vitamin E, and electrolytes. She eats decently well when fed, but she can’t walk over to food and water herself. She’s very energetic and vocal, she just doesn’t have the ability to move around and it’s heart breaking. She also doesn’t seem to be growing much — she is 5 days old and her siblings are much bigger than her. My sister has reached out to all the vets in our area and no one is willing/able to take a look, and we desperately want to help this baby. If you have any advice at all, please comment! We would be so grateful, especially as we are still relatively new to having chickens. Obviously we know there is a chance that we will have to put her down but that is absolutely last resort. My sister views her chickens as pets and they are all very precious to her. submitted by /u/JarJarbinks_Just [link] [comments]
- Day old chick only flops to one sideWe just hatched some chicks and ever since this guy came out of his egg he just stays flopped to one side (right side). He doesn’t like being forced to lay on his other side and doesn’t really use his right leg at all. He won’t eat but I can get him to take a couple drops of water. He’s maybe 24 hours old now. Currently he’s separated from his siblings cause they just trample him and walk all over him. I’m not sure what to do from here. I’ve been trying to just keep him upright for now. He moves around and peeps occasionally but doesn’t walk submitted by /u/liquidscience89 [link] [comments]
