Rescued a terror..
Our take
I recently rescued a little feathered terror who was wandering around a neighborhood for weeks, and let me tell you, this “poor baby chick” turned out to be quite the bantam! With a flock of standard chickens at home, I was curious to see how she’d fit in, so I set her up in her own mini chicken coop. But this pint-sized escape artist has already managed to break free twice, soaring to the highest point in the barn just to taunt us! While she’s receiving treatment for scaly leg mites and some cuts, she’s taken a liking to me—cuddles and all! However, she absolutely loathes my husband and sons. Someone suggested she might be an old game hen.

| I got a call that a “poor baby chick” was wandering in a neighborhood for the last few weeks. She was finally captured and the “chick” was a bantam. I have no bantams, just a ton of standards, but took her home and placed her in her own mini chicken coop. The little terror has escaped twice, so now she is padlocked in. She loves to escape and fly to the highest part of the barn and taunt us. She is being treated for scaly leg mites, as well as some cuts on her body. She likes me, lets me hold and cuddle her. However, she HATES my sons and husband. Like loathes them. Someone said shes an old game hen, any other guesses? Any advice? [link] [comments] |

- Tricked by a chickenI was looking for her everywhere, I only have 11 chickens so I know when one is missing m. She wasn’t in the coop, not in the garage. Not on the porch. No signs of a struggle- all the other hens were acting normal, and my rooster was unfazed. I used treats, I kept searching. I checked the field across the street, I walked all up and down my road. I checked the bushes and natural hides in my yard MULITPLE times. Finally I found her. Hidden in the leaves, in my yard. On a hidden nest of eggs that she must have been hiding for some time, as it was an impressive amount for a little bantam. And then she screamed at me!!! And bit me Shame her, her name is Pumpkin. submitted by /u/BooksAndCranniess [link] [comments]
- Left my chicken run door open yesterday and caught some squatters...I just had a very bizarre Sunday. I leave my run door open for my girls whenever I'm home and check on them throughout the day. Yesterday afternoon, while doing the rounds, I spotted one of these little babies running around inside the run cheeping her little head off. Absolute flabbergasted, I did a sweep of the yard and found another one huddled in a deep corner on the fence line. We live in a standard fenced-in suburban neighborhood with no real water sources nearby, so I'm very confused as to how they happened to end up in my yard that coincidentally has all the facilities to care for chicks. I'm guessing mama duck had a nest in my neighbor's yard, tried to march her new brood to water, and these two somehow got under the fence. The loud one must've heard my chickens and ran to the coop for safety. I drove around the neighborhood looking for mama, but to no avail. Once it started getting dark I brought them inside to the brooder and got them set up for the night. I immediately started imagining the movie-like scenario of raising them and eventually releasing them to a nearby pond where I could visit them for years to come, but unfortunately I understand that the best thing I could do for them in reality is to turn them over to a wildlife rehab to ensure they have the best chance in the wild. I've contacted a local facility and plan to turn them over today. I'm told they're going to be raised by their resident duck mother, Ingrid, along with her adopted flock. Just wanted to share with some folks that might appreciate it! I know every time I see some Mallards I'll imagine it's them. And who knows. Maybe it will be. submitted by /u/treasurebeard [link] [comments]
- New chicken can't stand up, but is eating and drinking.Hi guys, I got a new hen for my serama rooster, one of our family members also keeps bantams and agreed to let us buy one of their hens. she seemed fine when we first saw her on the video call, and the first time I touched her a hot noon, which is also the day I bought her,she could stand. I then played with my cousins, because we were set to go home at night , yes I'm a child. so they kept her first in a bamboo chciken cage, then she was there for a few hours. It was very hot out so I'm thinking maybe she had a heat stroke? I didn't think she would be affected because the area at that time was a bit shaded.I know, I was wrong for this. Thank you for your insights, in advance I'm a new chciken keeper so any help would be appreciated, thank you!!! submitted by /u/FreshMeet7529 [link] [comments]
- Who is my feathery visitor? This lady keeps prowling my yard for the last week, as far as I could find online it appears to be a gamefowl rather than your standard egg-laying chicken. I live somewhat rural and I'd say 1/3 of my neighbors keep chickens, but is there a reason one might just abandon their flock and go rogue? I assume my yard is just prime for snacks at this point, but no clue why she's doing her solo trips. submitted by /u/PukefrothTheUnholy [link] [comments]
