Recommendations for layer feed—please read.

Frustrated over commercial feed alternatives.
I have had chickens for about 5 years. Currently have a flock of ~30. I LOVE my girls, i am 95% vegetarian. I don’t eat chicken, ever, because i have come to see them pretty much as “people” and i love each and every one of them dearly.
I have lost several over the years due to disease, which is normal, I think. Each time I lose one I try to figure out why, then correct it; the latest is ASCITES.
After reading about it I realize my pellet feed is not helping: organic, 20% protein, which may be too high. I have been feeding it as i have 4 roosters that do not need the additional calcium.
IF you do not feed pellets the girls do not get the proper nutrition—they just pick out what they like/want. They free range (about 1/3 of an acre) and put themselves to bed every night.
Looking for suggestions that are somewhat cost effective (i give away their eggs).

- Free-range is the way to goI see so many complaints about Cornish cross meat chickens: they're gross, they're messy, they can't move around, etc...I've been raising them for years and don't experience these issues at all due to free ranging. The chicks go out around 3 weeks and learn to forage from the rest of our flock. They spend very little time in front of the feeder, and act like any other breed of chicken until around 8-9 weeks, when they start to slow down some. We harvest at 8-10 weeks for a larger whole bird (usually around 10lbs dressed). The birds in this photo are 8 weeks. - Opinions on This Feed?Hey y'all - I've only been keeping hens for 5 months and went with this brand's grower mash, then switched to their layer mash. I saw someone on yt recommend it and saw that I could get it easily via Amazon and Chewy... But I wanted to check what others have to say about this brand, or what others would recommend that is just as easy to get. - Pointers on helping my chickens be more comfortable with me.first and foremost - I am eternally grateful to this SR! My chickens are scared of people. I'm just looking for ways to make them more comfortable with me. they were only held as chicks, confined to a small, inappropriate space before I received them. I had to give away one rooster. so I need some sage chicken advice! here's what I'm doing: -I am very calm around my chickens -When I let them out in the morning I very softly say good morning, like I used to do when my kids are babies. -I will sit next to their run, while I eat or at least 5-30mins a day. -I give them treats. -I gently pet them when I close them up for the night, until I can see it bothering them, and stop.
