Let's be honest, folks, the eternal struggle against stubborn mascara is a universal truth. We've all been there, staring in the mirror, wondering if that lingering smudge is leftover makeup or…something else entirely. It's a particularly relatable feeling when you’re juggling farm chores and chicken wrangling – the last thing you need is a beauty crisis adding to the chaos. That's why we're cluck-tastic excited about this DIY rosemary lavender mascara remover! It’s a simple solution to a frustrating problem, and it perfectly aligns with the ethos of Chicken Scratch Diaries: finding resourceful, natural solutions for everyday life. We’ve always championed making things yourself, as evidenced by posts like Adopted chick success!, where we celebrate the joy of nurturing and caring for our feathered friends, and that same spirit applies to tending to our own well-being. It really speaks to embracing a simpler, more self-sufficient lifestyle, even if that self-sufficiency extends to removing last night’s eyeliner. And speaking of embracing the simple life, check out this Chicken photo dump – sometimes a little visual respite from the everyday is just what you need after a long day.
The beauty of this DIY remover isn’t just about banishing mascara residue; it’s about embracing natural ingredients and avoiding harsh chemicals. So many commercial removers are packed with things you can’t even pronounce, and frankly, we’d rather not slather our faces with mystery ingredients. Rosemary and lavender? Those are scents we know and love, smells that evoke calm and – let's be real – a touch of rustic charm. It’s a far cry from the days of scrubbing our faces raw with cotton balls soaked in questionable solvents. The article rightly points out the frustration of those lingering streaks, the little guessing games we play in the morning. It’s a tiny annoyance, sure, but those little annoyances add up, and finding a simple, effective solution feels like a small victory. And, as we’ve seen with our community's support for Update on injured hen: she's gotten a lot better!, there’s a shared appreciation for resilience and overcoming challenges, whether it’s a hen bouncing back from an injury or banishing stubborn makeup.
Beyond the immediate benefit of cleaner eyes, this DIY approach taps into a larger trend toward mindful consumerism. We’re increasingly aware of the impact our purchasing choices have on the environment and our own health. Making our own skincare products, even something as simple as mascara remover, is a small step towards reducing waste and taking control of what we put on our bodies. It’s about reclaiming a bit of agency in a world that often feels overwhelming. Plus, let's be honest, there's a certain satisfaction in whipping up something useful with just a few simple ingredients. It's a mini-accomplishment that can brighten even the most chaotic day. This aligns perfectly with our community’s values – we’re all about resourcefulness, sustainability, and finding joy in the everyday. It’s a delightful intersection of homesteading principles and self-care.
Ultimately, this article represents more than just a recipe for mascara remover. It's a testament to the power of simple solutions, natural ingredients, and a little bit of DIY ingenuity. As we continue to explore ways to simplify our lives and connect with nature, it’s exciting to see even our beauty routines embracing a more sustainable and straightforward approach. One question we’re watching closely: will this trend toward DIY skincare continue to gain momentum, and how will it reshape the beauty industry as a whole? Or will we all just be back to buying expensive, chemical-laden removers? We’re hoping for the former, of course – a world where clean beauty is accessible, affordable, and delightfully easy to create.

Nothing is worse than realizing your mascara lingers on even after using that name-brand mascara remover.

What’s in typical mascara removers
Many people stop using store bought makeup removers to avoid:
- Fragrance
- Alcohol
- Preservatives
- Phthalates
- Parabens
…and the list goes on. It’s nearly impossible to identify many of these ingredients without an app like EWG.
The extra frustrating thing for me was that even with “cleaner” ingredients- my branded products didn’t even remove all of my mascara.

Ingredients for natural DIY mascara remover
I’ve used a lot of natural ingredients in the past to remove mascara, and they all had pros and cons.
What I love about this recipe is that it combines the right balance (in my opinion) of ingredients that are good for delicate skin around the eyes.
Lavender
Infusing dried lavender is the perfect way to extract its benefits.
Lavender is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antibiotic properties.
We’re using infused lavender instead of lavender essential oil, which is gentler around the eyes.

Rosemary
Rosemary has many of the same skin-calming benefits as lavender. It’s also antifungal.
With its antimicrobial properties, it can also act like a natural preservative.
Jojoba oil
Commonly used in skincare and hair care products, jojoba oil is mild and skin-friendly.
It helps attract water to the skin instead of drying it out like many mascara removers.
Fractionated coconut oil
Another great carrier oil for skin care, and it can help remove even waterproof mascara.
Castor oil
You’ve probably heard about castor oil being used to grow lashes long and strong!
It makes a great companion to the other oils and herbs in this recipe.
See the recipe card below for the full instructions for this recipe.

Natural Rosemary Lavender Mascara Remover
Make this easy, natural mascara remover that's effective and gentle.
Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons dried lavender flowers
- 2 Tablespoons dried rosemary
- 1/3 cup jojoba oil- approx (or enough to cover dried rosemary and lavender in a small jar)
- 1 Tablespoon fractionated coconut oil
- 1/2 Tablespoon castor oil
Instructions
1. FOR SLOW INFUSION METHOD: Add lavender flowers and rosemary leaves to a small (4 oz) jar and pour jojoba oil on top. (Make sure oil completely covers the herbs.) Let sit for 6 weeks, then strain. Then skip to Step 3.
2. FOR QUICK INFUSION: Pour the herbs and jojoba oil into a glass bowl or the top part of a double boiler. (Make sure oil completely covers the herbs.) Add water to the bottom part of the double boiler or saucepan and heat the oil and herbs in the top bowl on low heat. Do not let the water boil and do not let water into the oil mixture. Let oil infuse for at least 30 minutes to an hour on low heat. Proceed to step 3.
3. Strain the infused herbs out of the jojoba oil.
4. Reserve 1 Tablespoon of the infused oil (store any extra for future use).
5. Add the 1 Tablespoon infused jojoba oil, the fractionated coconut oil and the castor oil to a small glass dropper bottle.
6. To use: shake well before each use. Drop a few drops on a clean makeup remover pad and gently swipe away mascara. (I like these reusable bamboo pads.) A little goes a long way!
