Hen or Roo
Our take
Meet Phoebe, my delightful 13-week-old Speckled Sussex! Even though her comb and waddle haven’t turned red yet—leading me to lean towards “hen”—I can’t help but notice those saddle feathers sprouting in. The clock is ticking, as I have a chance to swap her for a pullet at the feed store, but only until she’s three months old. I’m torn; Phoebe’s incredibly friendly and has stolen my heart, but we definitely don’t want another rooster in the mix! I could wait a bit longer to see how she develops, but then I’d risk facing the challenge of rehoming her if she turns out to be a cock-a-doodle-doo. Decisions, decisions! What do you think I should do?

| This is my 13 week old Speckled Sussex, Phoebe. Her comb and waddle are not red yet, which makes me say hen, but does she have saddle feathers coming in? I have the opportunity to take her back to the feed store and exchange her for a pullet (not necessarily the same breed), but they will only do the exchange up to about 3 months, so I need to decide now. She’s super friendly and I hate to part with her, but we don’t want another rooster. I could also wait to let her grow out more and see, but if she is a rooster we will be left trying to rehome her and exchanging her won’t be an option. [link] [comments] |
