| | Does anyone know what might be going on with this girl / what I should do next with this one? What I’ve done so far: - isolated in a comfy, cool, safe room. - 20 min epsom salt soak & DE rinse. - given part of a tums dissolved in water. - given water & electrolytes - was able to encourage a little eating What I’d like to do: - keep her on electrolytes for a day or two and consider adding a round of CORID or dewormer. What I know: - she’s been lethargic these past two days. I saw her sort of lifting her butt, sitting or laying to the side with her wings dropped and tail up. Walking slightly unevenly. When I went to get her yesterday she seemed to have perked up so I left her alone. Today she seemed worse, so into the dog crate she went. - cloaca looks healthy and pink. She may have been straining when I first pulled her from the run but isn’t showing any signs of straining now. No prolapse, no discharge, no poopy butt - just a healthy pink cloaca. - Young hen (~ 20 weeks) right around the age she may start laying or potentially just did. - inspected for wounds (none). feet are also healthy and fine. - I need helpHi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on one of my hens. She’s a female, just about a year old, and recently I’ve noticed she’s not looking as well as the rest of my flock. Her comb is a bit darker than the others, and there seems to be some mild swelling in her face along with small speckles on it. Behavior-wise, she’s definitely off. She tends to stay away from the roosters and avoids any related interactions, sits puffed up in the corner a lot, and isn’t very active. When I come near, she runs to me, tries to hide, and wants to be picked up constantly. She just doesn’t seem like she’s thriving the way she used to. She is still showing interest in food and water and appears to be eating and drinking normally. For context: • The rest of the flock appears completely healthy • No signs of mites or lice • I recently treated the flock for coccidiosis (another hen had it) • I’ve checked her feathers and vent thoroughly and didn’t find anything abnormal initially. (more on this later in the post.) • I also recently had another hen isolated for a possible respiratory infection and wry neck I’d appreciate any guidance possible. She’s quite special to me. And I will do whatever I can to help her. Please help. Recent update….. I isolated her from the flock and started her on some basic vitamins, vitamin E B12 and selenium as well as antibiotics. She’s on day 5 and today a few days ago I noticed she was pulling feathers out on her side upon further inspection. This is what the irritated area looks like…. I have since put a makeshift onesie on her out of a sock to keep her from accessing the area. But she doesn’t seem to be getting any better. - Update on sick chicken: read and learnA couple of days ago I posted a question on one of my chickens who got sick. Below you will find the story. 3 year old chicken, in good health suddenly was without energy and separated herself from the flock. When I picked her up, watery fluid ran out of her beak. I emptied her crop and a decent amount of fluid came out that smelled a bit but not really bad. I put her in a box in the garage and checked on her a couple hours later. Her crop felt mushy and was filled with water again. I emptied it and something that looked like a part of a transparent plastic bag or a balloon came out. She ate a little and I kept her in the garage for the night. Next morning she had not pooped and was quite lethargic, not interested in eating and just standing puffed up with closed eyes. If she walked it was without balance. I checked if she was egg bound but found nothing. I then decided to give her an Epsom salt bath to see if that would help. When washing my hands I saw that she stood calm in the bath with her head through the opening in the box. I turned around to dry my hands for perhaps 10 seconds and when I looked again, she had pulled her head through the opening and was basically drowning. I saved her but thought she was gone, she couldn't stand anymore but after drying her and holding her for a while it went a little better. That evening she ate a tiny bit. She had a mushy crop again but I wanted to give her a break and just added apple cider vinegar to her water. Next day she had pooped a bit. I found two worms and the poop was green. I got Flimabo, a dewormer, from the vet and treated her and her sisters. Next day she had a little more energy so I let her out with the others under supervision. After a couple of hours she got tired and just laid in the sun. This morning she has pooped but I found no visible worms but there could be dmall ones. She is still a little slower than normal but much, much better than two days ago. What I think what happened is that she had worms, ate the plastic bag and then couldn't empty her crop. The worms continued to take whatever they needed and she became malnourished resulting in the green poop. By removing the plastic, the obstruction was gone but she was too weak because of the worms. After the worms were addressed she is now recovering rapidly. Lessons learned - There may be multiple issues going on at the same time. What initially looked like an impacted crop, and later a sour crop was also a worm issue - NEVER leave your chickens unsupervised while she has an Epsom salt or similar bath. - Help diagnosing sick chicken!Hi there, I found some green droppings that have been in my chicken coop for the last two days. I found out today who it was as the poor girl is puffing up a lot and is lethargic. I started her out with an Epsom salt bath while I did some research. I observed her crop was quite hard and started to massage the area while I put her into a brooder for some isolation. It did seem like I helped some stuff move along since her crop is no longer hard, and she has since had some more green droppings but is still puffed up. I am not so sure she has sour crop after all if she is able to pass droppings? .I am not sure what to do at this point but am concerned she is in trouble - any help would be much appreciated!
