| | what could do this?! We lost 1 of our girls today (still holding up some hope maybe she is hiding somewhere)- something literally pulled our hot wire off and ripped off our hardware cloth to get to my girls this morning! I think this happened around 7 am. Our Hotwire holder was literally ripped off the wood and chewed in 2 and something put claws into the hardware cloth then ripped a huge hole and pulled it down (I already pulled it up for the photo so the girls wouldn’t come out again)- it did not pull the cloth off at a seam- this was literally pulled apart. I’m heartbroken but so thankful none of my other girls (or 1 rooster) seem hurt minus a few pulled feathers and being upset. I found a few walking around near the coop/run and the rest of the girls were inside still. There’s some feathers on the ground and nothing else anywhere. I will be walking our entire property today to look for her or her body 😔 Just sick with worry about them now too!! Hubs will patch up the wire and hot wire today and I’ll put my outside ring camera (with alerts on) we have on our rabbit building outside my girls but what else can we do? Our rabbits are in a building but my daughter has show birds in a small run right next to my chickens with almost zero protection like my girls have and nothing even looked at them (she has them in a temporary housing for the show season)- I tried to do literally everything I could think of to keep my girls safe and I failed them almost as soon as we moved (been here since Oct/Nov) 😭😭😭😭 We later found out there has been mountain lions in our area (apparently they took down a cow this week)- could this be a mountain lion? Something else? Any ideas or help would be appreciated. - Sad day todayI sit outside with my chickens and have a pretty good relationship with them. They always run to me and let pick them up. Today I went inside for a quick second and I came outside to feathers everywhere, specifically in their dust hole. After investigating, I knew she was gone just by how many feathers there were, but I called my husband to help me find her. Found feathers across the street and followed them into the woods. Found 3 separate piles along a game trail, but no little Henrietta. I feel absolutely devastated. They are my little flock and Henrietta was the leader and always the first to run to me. I am pretty sure it was a fox because when I was in the woods across the street a realized there was a perfect view from the woodline and have seen a fox peering over the Ridgeline a couple times since. When they're not outside they have a coop and run inside of our garage. We're supposed to move them outside to an outdoor run, but I'm so scared this fox (strong assumptions because my neighbors have told me after the fact that a fox killed 19 of theirs in one day) is going to make it its personal mission to kill other girls, and my heart is broken over poor Henrietta. submitted by /u/WrenchJrNerd [link] [comments]
- Dog got ahold of my chicken…So today the worst thing happened and I feel so so awful. I have six 12ish week old chickens, it’s my first flock of my own. Lately they keep escaping the run even after I have raised the fencing and clipped their wings. I have no idea how they are doing it. I also have 7 dogs. I ALWAYS walk out and check to make sure none of the chickens have escaped their run (it’s 350sq ft and has 4ft fencing all around) before letting the dogs out and I stand and watch them while they run around. Today I forgot to grab a water, it’s hot here in Arizona so I walked back inside for 30 seconds to grab some. I go to walk back out and somehow one of my dogs has one of my girls. She seems physically fine other than some tail feathers being ripped out. She’s walking and eating and drinking but I’m still SO worried and I feel so awful that I took my eyes off the dogs for even a second. Is there anything I should be looking out for involving like internal injuries or shock? Picture of Clover after the fact. - My flock was murdered last night.We had our first flock of 6 hens for almost a year before my dad woke me up to tell me an animal had gotten in and killed them and left the remains. I haven't inspected the area yet as there are apparently still feathers everywhere and it's been less than an hour since I found out, but the animal burrowed under the chicken wire/bent it up to get in. We hadn't secured the bottom of the wire into the ground as we didn't expect this issue (again, first time chicken owners), so it wasn't the hardest thing to do to bend it up and get in. What is the best method for securing the wire into the ground? I'm also extremely upset so I'd appreciate not dragging me for not properly securing it in the first place.
