Advice for Chicken Coops and Breeds (1st time)

Our take

Hello there, future chicken enthusiast! It sounds like you and your fiancé are about to embark on an egg-citing journey into the world of chicken keeping—congratulations on both your upcoming wedding and your coop plans! When it comes to choosing between a movable coop and a stationary one, each option has its perks and quirks. Movable coops offer flexibility and fresh forage for your feathered friends, while stationary setups provide stability and space for nesting. You might also ponder whether to box build or DIY your coop—both can be cluck-tastic if tailored to your needs. As for breed suggestions, mixing egg-layers with meat birds can create a well-rounded flock. Let's dive into the delightful details of coop design and breed choices together!

Hi! My fiance and I have talked and agreed that after our wedding this September we are going to start building a coop and purchase chickens (hopefully we can get a gas heater and start in October).

We are wondering, if we want a movable chicken coop, what the pros and cons are? If a stationary coop is better? Box build or DIY coop? For about 1/2 an acre, how many are ideal?

Edit: I realize that I forgot to ask for breed suggestions too. I know that I do plan on having chickens for consumption and also chickens for eggs.
