Chicken blew in with a storm. Question about nesting.
Our take

| Hi everyone. Last year we had some pretty bad storms and we had a random young hen show up in our back yard after one. My wife got some feed and started feeding her right away. She would eat but was skittish if you got too close. It's been about 6 months now and she has stuck around just sleeping in the brush. Last month I finally bought her a nesting box to give her a nice home but I couldn't get her to go in it. Then she disappeared for 3 days and we thought maybe an owl got her. She came back one morning and was starving. After she ate, I watched closely to see where she went and found where she is nesting. She has picked a great nesting site up inside a small tree hollow and there's lots of ferns blocking the view. She has been on the nest for another 3 days now and so I brought her down some food. My question is, what will happen to any eggs she is sitting on? Will they eventually just go bad? We have no idea where she came from and, as far as we know, there is no other chickens anywhere close to us so the eggs can't have gotten fertilized. She pecked at me when I tried to pet her today. I could grab her I'm sure but I would hate to destroy the trust that we have built. I just want to make sure that she is going to be ok and not sit there, wasting away, while waiting for eggs that will never hatch... Thanks for any advice! [link] [comments] |

- What to do with a random chicken that randomly showed up at my house?A random hen showed up at my house about three weeks ago and I'm unsure what to do with her. None of my neighbors have chickens so she's not theirs and I haven't seen anyone else around with them either. My yard is 1 acre and surrounded by woods and bamboo. She stays along the perimeter of the woods and will come within ten feet of the house front door where I have bird feeders to eat the seed on the ground. I bought some chicken food and have been leaving her piles out under the bird feeder and along where I see her most often next to the woods. She's skittish and will run away cackling if we startle her but won't run completely away, just far enough that no one could get her and then stare at you. She doesn't trust anyone enough to come near if you call her and shake a cup of food but she will stay just out of reach and come eat the food when I go back inside. Should I try to catch her, build a coop and see if she sleeps in it? I'm worried about her sleeping in the bamboo and want to do something for her. submitted by /u/PorcelainPrimate [link] [comments]
- New chicken owner seeking advise 😅Hello! Looking for some extra feedback and advice. I’m sorry this is a long one. We recently rescued two “stray” chickens. They were in a bleak situation at our rental property. We did our due diligence and asked all the neighbors and nobody claimed them or came for them the whole month. They roosted on a tiny branch every night in our front yard and never left. After about a month caring for and keeping an eye on them there, we made the decision to bring them to our home with huge fenced in back yard, ordered a nice coop, proper food and all the things they would need. They’re definitely young, and had never been in a coop or eaten normal food, we know that now. Took about 6 nights of me manually putting them into the coop (they tried roosting on the bottom slat of our sons playground) for them to go in it on their own which they are now doing every evening 🥹🙌🏼 We live in an area where a lot of people have chickens so I did have a few resources to ask most of my first time chicken owner questions. But a few remain as we are all still adjusting to each other lol The first morning after we brought them home, one of the chickens laid behind our koi pond (despite having nesting material and nest boxes inside their new coop) This was fine as I’m sure she felt safe and secure back behind that covered area. I added nest material back there, but had a friend tell me to continue to put eggs in the nest boxes every night so they would hopefully switch over to that. She never did… Every morning she lays behind the koi pond. The first FIVE days she laid two eggs every morning. I was concerned about this at first, but chalked it up to accelerated ovulation in a new layer after doing some research. She did a few days only laying one, and now occasionally still lays two a day. I know they are not nest sharing as the second chicken never goes behind the koi pond. The second chicken has yet to lay, aside from one soft shell white egg inside the roosting area… I assume it was hers. Since I don’t KNOW their exact age, I don’t know what to expect with “first time layers”. Any feedback here is helpful. They are also not super interested in their food??? I leave the feeder stocked in the coop, but they run to me every time I come out so I just throw their mealworm/sunflower treat out but honestly they don’t seem interested in that either even though they used to love it. They pick a few things out then leave majority of it now. Been giving random fruit and appropriate left overs but they pick at it and then look at me like I’m crazy. Am I doing something wrong?? 🫠🤣 Thank you for reading this novel and for any helpful feedback you can offer this first time chicken owner!! Picture of our girlies for tax. AND the one weird egg in last photo. Their names are Spicy (I’ll leave it to the imagination as to why😂), and Henrietta. Spicy is the layer, Henrietta laid the weird egg that one time. submitted by /u/Suspicious-Corgi5949 [link] [comments]
- i think my chicken is broken?over the past few weeks, donna hasn’t been able to make it into the nesting boxes with her egg. she’s laid in a box maybe twice all month? i recently moved everyone into a new coop and she’s used those new boxes, and the other two layers are using them just fine. i even left the old coop open to help in case she’s not sure about the new ones. her shell is super thin lately too. i just switched from layer feed to all flock (added a few new chicks) but she still has access to the oyster shells and is definitely eating them. she also gets most of the shell back when i cook up the eggs that break (most of them, since she’s laying on the roosting bar 🥹). she’s about a month past a 10 week broody spell, so i was thinking she’s maybe just backed up and out of practice? which would account for the eggs coming around 5am most days? but i would’ve expected her to get back into the routine by now. i have no idea of her age but is this maybe indicative of her laying cycle coming to an end? anything i can do to help her? submitted by /u/mensfrightsactivists [link] [comments]
- Issue with my naked-butt chickenAs you well know if you life in the northern part of the US, this last winter was rough. We had a large stretch where it was -20 degrees plus. During that time, things were tough. I confined by birds to the inner coop for their safety, and brought them out hot water ever couple of hours. During this time, while everyone was inside and stressed, two of my chickens somehow got a poop balls on the fluffy feathers on their butts. I couldn't get them what to bathe them, so I tried working them with my fingers and breaking them off a bit. Eventually, two of my birds had feathers rip off their butts with poop balls. I used hen healer paste on them to cover their butts the rest of the winter, but this barred rock never grew those feathers back. Her butt is also somewhat chapped looking. My fear is that she got slight frostbite on her butt. Since then, she's been getting picked on. I put a saddle coat on her to cover her body, but they would pick at her bare butt. Today, I saw some blood near her vent, so I quickly removed her, cleaned the slight wound, sprayed her with silver spray, and rubbed the area with hen healer. Her poop is normal, she's active, eating and drinking. I checked her for parasites and found none. I saw no maggots or anything to make me think fly strike either. I think she has lost some weight, but I think it's because she's been broody and being bullied. I'm going to keep her in this kennel until she heals up a bit. Has anyone dealt with the bare butts? Why did only some of the feathers grow back since January? Will she be bare forever? How can I help her grow her feathers back so they stop picking on her? submitted by /u/Cheeseaisleinheaven [link] [comments]
