One of our feathered friends seems to be experiencing a peculiar issue, yet she’s still hanging out like a champ on the roosting bar. Some folks suspect it might be mites or pesky rodents nibbling at her legs, but a thorough check of the coop didn’t reveal any rodent intruders. With hardware cloth fortifying the run both above and below ground, it seems like a solid defense. Plus, using hay for nesting and pine shavings for bedding should keep things cozy. If anyone has ideas or insights into this quirky conundrum, let’s hear those cluck-tastic suggestions!
| | This is one of eight hens and she is the only one with the problem. She doesn’t seem too affected by it, really has been hanging out on the roosting bar every time I go out there. Many say it’s either mites or rodents biting at her legs. I checked the outside of the coop and didn’t see anything indicating a rodent forcing its way in. The run is surrounded by hardware cloth, a foot above and a foot below ground (not reflected in previous posts, has since been significantly upgraded). - My girls have mites?Made a post a few days ago about my girls losing feathers, and I thought it was my rooster. I have an appointment to bring them in Wednesday to make sure and get the proper stuff to take care of it. I tried premethrin but it’s not doing shit. - Help!Need some insight on what could be the problem here. I currently have 6 hens. Plenty of space to roam in the coop and I let them free range a few hours at least every day. I clean the coop regularly and they dust bathe frequently. They pick at each others feathers and backs, especially the ones in the pictures, and I can’t figure out how to get them to stop. I feed them higher protein feed and clean fresh water. They’ve been this way for months and I hate the way they look. Any ideas???? My black hens and the one RIR don’t have this issue although just recently I’ve seen some bare patches on the necks of the black hens. - I need helpHi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on one of my hens. She’s a female, just about a year old, and recently I’ve noticed she’s not looking as well as the rest of my flock. Her comb is a bit darker than the others, and there seems to be some mild swelling in her face along with small speckles on it. Behavior-wise, she’s definitely off. She tends to stay away from the roosters and avoids any related interactions, sits puffed up in the corner a lot, and isn’t very active. When I come near, she runs to me, tries to hide, and wants to be picked up constantly. She just doesn’t seem like she’s thriving the way she used to. She is still showing interest in food and water and appears to be eating and drinking normally. For context: • The rest of the flock appears completely healthy • No signs of mites or lice • I recently treated the flock for coccidiosis (another hen had it) • I’ve checked her feathers and vent thoroughly and didn’t find anything abnormal initially. (more on this later in the post.) • I also recently had another hen isolated for a possible respiratory infection and wry neck I’d appreciate any guidance possible. She’s quite special to me. And I will do whatever I can to help her. Please help. Recent update….. I isolated her from the flock and started her on some basic vitamins, vitamin E B12 and selenium as well as antibiotics. She’s on day 5 and today a few days ago I noticed she was pulling feathers out on her side upon further inspection. This is what the irritated area looks like…. I have since put a makeshift onesie on her out of a sock to keep her from accessing the area. But she doesn’t seem to be getting any better. - Scaly leg mites?Hey all, does this look like scaly leg mites ? She’s been lethargic and unwell for the past few days. My chickens came with the house that I now live in. They aren’t hand-tame so ive been anxious about them getting sick and not knowing how to help them. I try to take the best care of them I can and I keep their coop clean.
